A solid carbonaceous product from the Coal Tar Filtration plant is fed into a coker unit at high temperature and pressure. The light products produced in the cracking process in the coker drums are routed back to our refining units. A solid black substance form in the coker drums. The solid black substance (also known as green coke or raw coke) consist of around 90% fixed carbon. This is also known as SASGREEN material. The SASGREEN material is then fed into a kiln (calciner) with the operating conditions closely controlled within specific parameters depending on final application. During the calcination process the structure and physical properties of the material change while most of the moisture and volatile matter are removed. The result of this process is a calcined pitch coke used for the production of SASCARB, SACOKE and CORRCARB material. SASCOKE of different grades are shipped internationally in bulk depending on customer requirements and final application. The SASCARB material is packed into different bag sizes from 8kg to 1ton bulk bags and different particle size distributions (PSD) depending on customer requirements. The SASCARB material is containerised and distributed Worldwide. One of the highly specialised materials produced in our process is known as CORRCARB which is used in the corrosion protection industry for the protection of pipelines and vessels against the destructive force of oxidation of the construction metal.

Pitch from Sasol’s Coal Tar Filtration plant is fed into a delayed coker unit at high temperature and pressure. The high explosive core is encased in various protective coverings developed to withstand the many conditions encountered in the fi eld. The difference between the standard types of Primacord® detonating cord is essentially the core load coupled with a difference in the degree of protection afforded by the encasements. Various combinations of materials such as textiles and plastics cover the raw PETN (Pentaerythritol Tetranitrate) core. The textiles used provide tensile strength and fl exibility, as well as resistance to abrasion and cutting, extremes of heat and cold or water and oil penetration.

DDS™ (Development Delivery System) is a proprietary, pumpable blasting intermediate and delivery system for underground development, bord and pillar and similar applications. A compact, robust delivery system mixes together intermediate product components in a fixed ratio and delivers the product into blast holes of 32mm diameter or larger at a rate of 40 - 50kg per minute. The system comprises of two blasting intermediate product components both of which are exempted and may be transported and stored as a non-explosive. The product is gassed in the blast hole to become an explosive.

Bulk Expan™ 100 is a revolutionary product used as a component to produce Ammonium Nitrate Fuel Oil (ANFO) or Heavy ANFO blends, such as the premium E6000P, used in very difficult & hard rock conditions.Expan™ is an innovative PPAN (Porous Prilled Ammonium Nitrate) product where, in addition to natural porosity, plastic microspheres are included in each Ammonium Nitrate Prill to ensure differentiation from standard market porous prills, whilst retaining the desirable properties of the standard prills (mechanical strength, fuel absorption and free-flow-ability). The inclusion of microspheres results in prills with special properties which favourably influence the performance in Ammonium Nitrate Fuel Oil (ANFO) and Heavy ANFO explosive products.

Expanfo™ is an innovative in situ ANFO (Ammonium Nitrate Fuel Oil) product where, in addition to natural porosity, sensitising plastic microspheres are included insitu in each ammonium nitrate prill, which is mixed with fuel oil in Mobile Manufacturing Units (MMUs). It must be noted that the microspheres remain intact during pneumatic loading, thereby allowing Expanfo™ to retain a lower density and increased sensitivity in the blast hole. This will result in a more ideal detonation behaviour and superior field performance compared to that achieved with equal volumes of standard market ANFO products.

E6000HR AN Emex™ Heavy ANFO Blend is extensively used in surface, opencast and quarry applications (hard rock conditions). E6000HR Heavy ANFO blend is prepared by mixing Matrix™ with Expan™ 200. Heavy ANFO blends (AN EmexTM) are prepared by blending Matrix™ (65%) with Expan™ (35%). All bulk explosive products are delivered down-the-hole using state of the art bulk delivery trucks (MMU’s -Mobile Manufacturing Units).

Matrix™ is an ammonium nitrate based emulsion which complies with the United Nations and South African standards for recognition as UN3375, class 5.1 oxidiser (i.e. non explosive). Matrix™ is the major ingredient in Heavy ANFO explosive products and gassed Matrix™.

The Blasting Cable Tester is used to check blasting cable integrity, from the face back to the NSS.The blasting cable tester does not apply any form of power, voltage or energy to the blasting cable under test, it is considered inherently safe and fi t for the purpose.

The NSU Verification Jig (NVJ) is used to test functionality of Network Slave Units (NSU).The unit incorporates: Mains power (220Vac) adaptor, 9 pin serial cable connector and Wiring harnesses required to connect to the NSU under test. The NSU Verification jig (NVJ) loads each of the six NSU ports with the equivalent of five SafeStart™ Instantaneous Electronic Detonators as will be displayed on the NSU LCD. A full functional test on the Network Slave Unit (NSU) is performed, including correct counting and fi ring of each Network SlaveUnit (NSU) port.

The Panel Connector Unit (PCU) is fitted with two robust stainless steel terminals for easy connecting of blasting cables. The Panel Connector Unit (PCU) is used to connect permanently installed port cables (armoured cables) to blasting cables/wires and are typically mounted in a safe place - on packs, near face winch cubbies on sidewall meshing, roof bolts etc.

The Hand Held SafeStart™ Initiator model SI-1 unit is a functional replacement for conventional shot exploders and is fully approved by the SABS in accordance with SANS 1717-2, Inspection Authority (IA) certificate number SABS M 109-287X.The Hand Held SafeStart™ Initiators (SI-1) is designed to fire a SafeStart™ instantaneous detonator from a distance of up to 1km away using standard blasting wire or cable. It is primarily used for secondary blasting or initiating a surface blast.

Only one Network Interface Unit (NIU) is required per shaft installation, located alongside the centralized computer in the control room. This unit links the centralised computer to the CBS network. Functions include conversion of RS 232 to a propriety special network protocol opto-isolation, optical fibre option, adaptive signal to noise ratio optimization, optimized message strategy and communications.

The Network Slave Station (NSS) is the control hardware located underground. The primary purpose is to count and fire SafeStart™ Instantaneous Electronic Detonators connected to each of the six ports. All Network Slave Stations (NSS) are connected to a common network they receive the fire command simultaneously allowing all blast faces in a mine to be initiated simultaneously.

The Network Slave Unit (NSU) is plugged into the Network Slave Station (NSS) box. It houses all functionality and intelligence for the Network Slave Station (NSS). It is easily ‘plugged-in’ and ‘plugged-out’ should maintenance be required.

The SafeStart™ Instantaneous Electronic Detonator is a modern ultra-safe functional replacement for the conventional Instantaneous Electric Detonator (IED). SafeStart™ units provide safe, precise, reliable, blast initiation in underground and surface mining applications. They facilitate a safe, fast and simple hook-up, for initiation of a charged panel/block, via the main shock tube trunkline.

Mine Commander™, the CBS control software, is loaded on the centralized computer usually located in the mine's control room. All blasting is carried out from this computer once the shaft is cleared and all people have returned to surface. Other Mine Commander™ functions include reporting of system and detonator status, record keeping of all events, blast histories, hardware progress indication, a display of all blast information, polling of 10 Network Slave Stations per second, fault diagnostics and access control.

The DaveyTronic® SP Digital Blasting System consists of a new generation Remote Blaster (DRB2), 2 Programming Units (PU) and a robust integrated Blast Driver (DBD). The system facilitates the optimising of timing patterns for all surface blast applications, enables remote blasting capability up to a maximum of 4500 DaveyTronic® programmable electronic detonators per blast (3 Blast Driver configuration in either Synchronised or Multi-blast blast modes). It further facilitates for programming of delays from 0 to 14000ms in 1ms steps with an accuracy of 0.02% of the programmed delay and full functional testing of detonators in the hole. The DaveyTronic® SP Digital Blasting System facilitates a Remote Blaster that controls numerous Blast Drivers located at different areas of the mine allowing for several blasts to be fired simultaneously from a central location. This feature allows for full synchronization of multi blast applications improving blast performance including improved and uniformal fragmentation, improved muckpile control to enhance excavation, dilution control, improved vibration control and repeatability. This allows for far larger blasts reducing downtime and increasing productivity.

In ‘Wired mode’ the DRB2 is connected directly to the detonators with the use of DaveyTronic® Busline. In ‘Wireless mode’ the DRB2 is connected wirelessly to 1 or more DBDs which are in turn connected to the detonators with DaveyTronic® Busline.

Ammonium Nitrate Solution (typically a 90% solution) colourless liquid at 120 degrees Celsius. Ammonium Nitrate Solution has a Nitrogen content of 30.8 %.

LAN (28) is available in a granular form. The product contains 28% nitrogen of which 50% as ammonium-N and 50% as nitrate-N. In addition LAN (28) contains 20% Dolomitic lime resulting in about 4.1% Ca and 2.1% Mg in the product. Both ammonium and nitrate are readily available for plant uptake. The 50/50, nitrate-N/ammonium-N ratio is close to the preferred ratio for most crops. LAN (28) is suitable for band placement as well as broadcast applications due to very low toxicity and volatilization effects. LAN (28) is not water soluble.

DISPERAL and DISPAL are the trademarks for the high-purity, highly dispersible boehmite powders and sols/dispersions manufactured by Sasol in Brunsbüttel, Germany, and in Lake Charles, Louisiana, USA. These boehmites (alumina hydrates), which are nano-sized in the dispersed phase, exhibit a unique combinations of purity, consistency and dispersibility that make them excellent materials for use in colloidal applications. The Sasol range of dispersible boehmites has traditionally been used in applications such as sol-gel ceramics, catalysis, refractory materials, rheology control and surface frictionizing. Other applications include surface coating as well as paint detackification, polymeradditives and functional fillers.

The collected and refined know-how to produce alumina hydrates via the sol-gel technique is used by Sasol to prepare other inorganic oxides or mixed oxides. The properties of these inorganic specialty materials are leading Sasol into new, interesting fields of research and application. One of these specialties is the hydrotalcite family (aluminium-magnesium compounds) which is obtained by hydrolysis of mixed alcoholates. Compared to alumina hydrates, hydrotalcites are even more alkaline in nature. Basicity is adjustable by increasing the Mg/Al ratio and/or incorporating anions other than OH-. Hydrotalcites have a double-layered metal hydroxide structure. The layers consist of magnesium and aluminium hydroxide octahedra sharing edges. Additional interstitial anions between the layers compensate the charge of the crystal and determine the size of the interlayer distance (basal spacing). While hydrotalcites are accessible through the corresponding metal salts, the metal alcoholate route, patented by Sasol, has advantages over other synthesis routes. Most important is that the Al/Mg ratio can be varied over a wide range. In addition, it is now possible to obtain hydrotalcites with a purity and a controlled anion content that have to date been unavailable. The calcined version PURALOX MG 28 consists of the spinel phase MgAl2O4. This oxide is another attractive catalyst support material for applications which require a lower degree of surface acidity than obtained in pure alumina. The advantage of PURALOX MG 28 is its high surface area of 100 m2/g in combination with its high phase purity. Also versions with an excess of Al2O3 (PURALOX MG 20) or MgO (PURALOX MG 30) are available.

Silica-alumina hydrates (SIRAL) and the corresponding oxides (SIRALOX) exhibit characteristics which differ significantly from pure aluminas. One of the key properties of silica-aluminas is their comparatively high level of surface acidity, making them useful catalyst support materials, for example in the field of refinery catalyst or in diesel-engine applications.

In addition to alumina powders, Sasol as a specialties business also offers shaped carriers such as spheres, extrudates, and tablets. A key advantage of Sasol's aluminas is their ability to form excellent supports. This application makes use of the aluminas' ability to peptize in the presence of monoprotic acids. The Sasol Brake Fluid DOT 4 brake fluid complies with the National Compulsory Standard Specification for Hydraulic Brake Fluids. Sasol Brake Fluid DOT 4 is not a mineral oil, but somewhat toxic hydraulic fluids, blended from glycols and selected additives. Skin and eye contact should be avoided. If swallowed obtain medical assistance. Avoid spillage onto vehicle paintwork which can be damaged if left in contact with the product. The Sasol range of dispersible boehmites has traditionally been used in applications such as sol-gel ceramics, catalysis, refractory materials, rheology control and surface frictionizing. Other applications include surface coating as well as paint detackification, polymeradditives and functional fillers.

The collected and refined know-how to produce alumina hydrates via the sol-gel technique is used by Sasol to prepare other inorganic oxides or mixed oxides. The properties of these inorganic specialty materials are leading Sasol into new, interesting fields of research and application. One of these specialties is the hydrotalcite family (aluminium-magnesium compounds) which is obtained by hydrolysis of mixed alcoholates. Compared to alumina hydrates, hydrotalcites are even more alkaline in nature. Basicity is adjustable by increasing the Mg/Al ratio and/or incorporating anions other than OH-. Hydrotalcites have a double-layered metal hydroxide structure. The layers consist of magnesium and aluminium hydroxide octahedra sharing edges. Additional interstitial anions between the layers compensate the charge of the crystal and determine the size of the interlayer distance (basal spacing). While hydrotalcites are accessible through the corresponding metal salts, the metal alcoholate route, patented by Sasol, has advantages over other synthesis routes. Most important is that the Al/Mg ratio can be varied over a wide range. In addition, it is now possible to obtain hydrotalcites with a purity and a controlled anion content that have to date been unavailable. The calcined version PURALOX MG 28 consists of the spinel phase MgAl2O4. This oxide is another attractive catalyst support material for applications which require a lower degree of surface acidity than obtained in pure alumina. The advantage of PURALOX MG 28 is ist high surface area of 100 m2/g in combination with its high phase purity. Also versions with an excess of Al2O3 (PURALOX MG 20) or MgO (PURALOX MG 30) are available.

Silica-alumina hydrates (SIRAL) and the corresponding oxides (SIRALOX) exhibit characteristics which differ significantly from pure aluminas. One of the key properties of silica-aluminas is their comparatively high level of surface acidity, making them useful catalyst support materials, for example in the field of refinery catalyst or in diesel-engine applications.

In addition to alumina powders, Sasol as a specialties business also offers shaped carriers such as spheres, extrudates, and tablets. A key advantage of Sasol's aluminas is their ability to form excellent supports. This application makes use of the aluminas' ability to peptize in the presence of monoprotic acids. A variety of extrudate properties can be obtained by using different grades of PURAL and CATAPAL aluminas and by controlling the formulation and extrusion variables.
