Overview
Sasol’s CarboTar Plant in our Synfuels Plant in Secunda produces high quality carbon-based products. The physical properties of our material, combined with distinctive chemical specifications makes it ideal for expansion into selected speciality markets.
Our carbon-based products are used in a broad range of applications including the manufacturing of small diameter graphite electrodes, cathode blocks for the aluminium industry, feedstock for the production of graphite artefacts that are used in the military and the aerospace industries, as a reductant in the platinum and ferroalloys industries, raw material for the production of high quality calcium carbide and silicon carbide and as a recarburizer or carbon raiser in the steel and foundry industry.
The low sulphur (0.25%) and high fixed carbon content (99.5%), in combination with the propensity of the calcined coke to graphitise at relatively low temperatures (2 700°C), makes the material suitable for higher value applications such as synthetic graphite, used in the lithium ion batteries and in the renewable energy industry (graphite/graphene in the production of solar cells). Based on our integrated coker or calciner configuration we offer customers in the speciality carbon, steel and aluminium industries a unique coal-based low sulphur green coke, low sulphur calcined coke and an ultra-low sulphur waxy oil coke.
